When Ari Afrizal went to work on December 26, 2004, he had no reason to expect anything unusual. The weather was nice, and everything seemed normal. Unfortunately, it was the day the deadly tsunami struck countries all around theIndian Ocean. Even worse, Ari was in the AcehprovinceofIndonesia, one of the areas hardest hit by the disaster.

Ari and his colleagues were working on the construction of a house when the tsunami struck. He remained on the raft for days and avoided starvation by eating coconuts that were floating in the sea. Day by day, Ari waved at several boats that came into his view, but none of them saw him. He began to believe that he would never be rescued. One day, a large ship came by, and Ari waved and whistled at it. This time he was lucky. The ship picked him up and took him safely back to land. Ari had been floating alone at sea for two weeks. No other tsunami survivor had been at sea that long.

The next time you are watching a film and you see one of the characters jumping out of a plane, falling off a horse, or being blown through a window – spare a thought for the stunt artist. Lots of people think that stunt artists are just “extras” who play small, unimportant parts in films and television. Nothing could be further from the truth.

A stunt artist must combine the skills of an actor with the physical abilities of a first-class athlete. He or she must be extremely fit, and highly trained in a number of activities like scuba-diving, horse riding, martial arts or parachuting.
